The Cape has been given rain. We need about three more weeks of it to make a real difference to the farmers and to the dams, but individually I feel so much more hydrated for the wetness of the past week. It is not supposed to be ideal weather to photograph in, but I have always loved it. I love the way it flattens out the background detail and opens up a recognition of what is immediately in front of you; visually forcing you towards being in the moment. It gives softness to harsh objects. In this picture the attention is drawn right down to the dynamic energy of one drop of water about to drip off a steel chain. That is being in the moment.

African Snipe

This image always reminds me of when I fell in love with the African Snipe. It was late afternoon and we were bird watching at Marievale. The light was right and I was intensely focused on what I was photographing, but a persistent inimitable noise from the sky was distracting me. I was being introduced to a whole new sound vocabulary.  The Snipe males where drumming their tail feathers during their display flights to attract a mate.
