Watermelons apparently originated in the deserts of North East Africa. As far back as 4000 years ago people used them for water and for food. Eating some for breakfast this morning I cannot help applauding the hearty fruit for its survival and spread all over the globe. Such a pure sweet exuberant burst of flavour.
These photographs are beautifully evocative: the first with the long road ahead and the pedestrian looking back at that heavy load of delicious fruit. In the second we note that the bakkie has seen better days, is overloaded and badly in need of a service – which brings a sense of wonder about the destination of those watermelons …
