African Black Oystercatcher 244 Swarttobie

African Oystercatcher coming in to land.
African Oystercatchers can commonly be found feeding along the rocky areas of the Yzerfontein coastline. When disturbed at night the fly up and make a loud piping sound. The African Oystercatcher is the emblem of the Yzerfontein Urban Conservancy. Some years ago they were endangered as a species due to vehicles on the beach disturbing their nests. vehicles are now mostly kept off the beaches. In recent years their numbers have increased, in part also because of the extra food provided by the invasive European Mussels.
