YZERFONTEIN URBAN CONSERVANCY / BEWAREA

African Penguin 03 Brilpikkewyn

There are a number of African Penguin breeding on Dassen Island. They can occasionally be spotted along the rocky sections of the Yzerfontein coastline. Their donkey-like braying sets them apart from other Penguins and earned them the local name of Jackass Penguins.
African Penguin pairs share in the parental duties.
Juvenile African Penguins wait in the nest while the parents go out to sea to bring back fish to feed them.
