YZERFONTEIN URBAN CONSERVANCY / BEWAREA

African Sacred Ibis 91 Skoorsteenveër

Sacred Ibis Juvenile. They are called Sacred because prior Egyptian civilisations mummified them and stored them in tombs. However, their tendency to frequent Yzerfontein rubbish bins alongside the murky appearance of the juveniles have led to the nickname ‘dirty Ibis’.
The adult Sacred Ibis has a much more dignified contrasting black and white colouring.
The breeding Sacred Ibis has loose black display feathers and pink patches on the wings.

Sacred Ibis tend to gather in flocks.
