Painted Lady flutters far

Thousands of Painted Lady butterflies are moving across our area during this season of heat after the rain. They sit still for a few seconds at a time only and I am grateful for the auto-focus on my camera being fast enough to capture them in such glorious detail. Their eyes show that they keep up a wary scrutiny of the photographer while the proboscis sinks into that inevitable next drop of nectar. The Afrikaans name Sondagsrokkie suggests that they have dressed up in their Sunday best: to be seen by others. A lovely tribute to these wafting bits of colour.

a mighty fine moon

I wonder how many times in my life I have responded to a friend’s (or sometimes many friends’) simple question: “are you taking pictures.”  The usual first response is to do a quick body check as to whether I feel strong enough to attempt what needs to be done, do a degree of mental arithmetic as to what this is going to cost me if I haul out 18 kg of equipment and what the likelihood is of getting a good result. The winner is always the challenge…  and the outcome is always one picture that is ever so slightly different from the others taken and that becomes the joy of memory over time. Thank you Toni and Rene for asking the simple question tonight: are you taking pictures. I like the result.
